The striking contrast between the idyllic oasis and the violent histories exhibited and collected in the ethnographic museum makes it quite easy to ignore the colonial past if you are not actively seeking out the museum. This tension between inside and outside is also noticeable in how Switzerland deals with its own colonial histories. By maintaining the stance of neutrality and the self image of a harmless and idyllic small country, people have to actively engage with colonial histories in order to learn about them and take responsibility.
